Sophie Chapman and Philippa Taylor are two halves of Aspiration Suits, an aspiring social movement exploring life goals and knowledge sharing. They are both close personal friends and colleagues.
In these difficult times it's important to support and encourage each other. "What creativity can there be when only money can buy you your next opportunity?". This is the current situation we are faced with. There are thousands of us struggling to pay our rent, who work multiple jobs and have little time or money to carve out something of our own.
Aspirations can be positive/ negative. They are all constructs and although everyone strives for authenticity, this authenticity is achieved with a pre existing aspirational construct in mind. For many recent graduates this construct may be the idea of the 'professional'. The way you might present yourself in an interview as a 'professional' is made up of multiple things. It's about what you wear, its about the words you use, the way you hold yourself, the processes you go through in order to achieve your professional realness status. Through these checkpoints, someone can identify you as a fellow professional; someone they believe has what it takes to answer enquiries on their behalf, someone who can cash up at the end of the day for them. Like it or not, these are hard times. You’ve got to play the game, you’ve got to fake it till you make it.
How boring though...
How much more exciting would it be, if we, the next generation of creatives actually had a torch passed to us without having to pay fuck loads for the opportunity to stroke its shiny, shiny surface. This isn't the case though and its boring to moan about.
So here we are. We will aspire, we will support each other, we will shout, we will scream, we will share our knowledge with each other, we will be as visible as possible in our imagined world, as our imagined characters, in the real world, together.
We make art, we make costumes, we make them for us, we make them for you, for the club, for the boardroom, we fucking love it.
